LL-37 is a 37-amino acid cationic antimicrobial peptide in humans, belonging to the Cathelicidin family. It is primarily produced by leukocytes and epithelial cells. LL-37 exerts broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity by disrupting the membrane integrity of bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses. Beyond its direct microbicidal effects, it also performs immunomodulatory functions, such as promoting immune cell chemotaxis, regulating inflammatory responses, enhancing wound healing, and stimulating angiogenesis.
