Tyrosine kinases are cell signalling proteins that are overstimulated in cancer cells. Inhibiting these proteins with tyrosine kinase inhibitors have the potential to decrease cancer cell growth, proliferation and spread. Toceranib is an example of a tyrosine kinase inhibitor that can be used to treat a variety of cancers in pets. Toceranib also stimulates the immune response against cancer and suppress blood vessel growth associated with cancer. If cancer loses their blood vessel supply, it will eventually starve itself of oxygen and nutrients, and thus die. Although Toceranib is an anti-cancer medication, it is not chemotherapy, which directly results in cancer cell killing.
Pros: Attractive treatment option because it can be administered orally at home, three times a week.
Cons: Potential for side effects. Requires safe handling and can be an expensive long-term option. It may take 6-12 weeks before a response occurs, which may be a challenge for fast-growing cancers.
In Dogs: Mast cell tumours, Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs), Carcinomas (anal sac, thyroid, nasal, bladder, bone cancer spread), and others like insulinoma or liver cancer.
In Cats: Mast cell tumours, Squamous cell carcinoma, Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs), and pancreatic cancer.
Monitoring: Regular rechecks are recommended (initially every 1-2 weeks, then every 2-3 months) consisting of physical exams, blood pressure checks, and laboratory tests.
